Sterling Sunday

Sterling is hiding from the fans.  You can still see his paw, poor puppy.

Stay cool

So it has been a little hot in Houston lately, the heat index has been over 100 and tomorrow it is expected to be 105.  So I have been stocking the fridge with cooling foods like watermelon, cucumbers, coconut water and these popsicles.

I don't now if they are any good or not, but I have a feeling that Adam and I will devour them this weekend.

Question to consider: When you make impulse buys at the store what do you usually buy?  I really like to try new products, but mostly I am drawn to different fruits and veggies.

Eye on the prize!

Today I got to my yoga class a little early and decided to walk around the shopping center.  I noticed a cupcake happy hour and decided to buy a cupcake.  All through class, when things got difficult I started to think about the yummy cupcake, so I was able to smile and take slightly deeper breaths.

I enjoyed my half of the cupcake so much this evening.  Adam may eat the rest when he gets home from his teacher training.

Question to consider: What made you smile today?  I also had a terrific lunch with a friend today, today was a great day and I am ready to get a good night's sleep.

Day 14

This picture was taken on Saturday, but I am still doing my daily handstand.  To be honest, the past couple of days I have had trouble holding the handstand for a full ten breaths.  My right wrist is feeling pretty sore and last night Adam had to spot me.  But at least I am still doing a handstand everyday!

Question to consider:  Do you have a preference for heat or ice when it come to soreness?  One of my teachers always says to heat, but I find icing helps it feel better.  I am testing out using heat only instead of ice.

Super moon

I was lucky enough to watch the moon both rise and set this weekend.  This weekend was the super moon, or the perigee-syzygy moon.  Basically the moon was the closest to the earth that it has been since May of last year, and the closest it will be until 2014.

I am just so grateful.

Question to consider: What do you see when you look at the moon?  Adam and I were discussing this last night, since he sees an animal when he looks at the moon, it is common to see a man's face.  I honestly have never found a picture in the moon.

Sterling Sunday

It is pretty late for the little guy, but he is still playing with a toy!

Fire

Happy solstice!  Summer is about fire, and one of the paintings I was working on had a fire theme to it.

I hope everyone takes the time to view the Super Moon this weekend!

Question to consider: What have you been looking forward to this summer?  Adam and I have a couple of trips coming up that I am really excited about.

Stillness

The past couple of days I have been searching for quiet and stillness.  I keep having headaches and have been spending a lot of time in dark rooms trying to find the stillness.

After my class on Tuesday I was inspired to practice resting and relaxing, little did I know that for the next couple of days I would not have much of a choice about resting and relaxing.  Relaxing is a skill, and frankly it is a skill I am not good at.

Question to consider: What do you when you are plagued by headaches?  Do you power through, take pain killers or find another way to resolve the situation?

To dance again....

Today while I was taking Sterling for a walk, I felt like listening to some music instead of my usual podcasts.  So I decided to listen to the soundtrack for A Very Potter Musical, which if you love Harry Potter you should take some time to watch.  It is hilarious.

But the song "to dance again," came on and I started singing out loud (while still at the park), but then I took a moment to really listen to the lyrics.  There is a line about "waiting all these years to dance again."  I started thinking about all the things I am "waiting" to do again.  I have been given this amazing opportunity but there are things I have simply stopped doing because the "time" isn't right or any other excuse.

Today that song is inspiring me to really examine what I am "waiting" to do and see if I can make it happen right now.  It is time to really look at my blueprint.

Question to consider: What are you waiting to do?  Can you make it happen now?

My first paintings

Here they are!  The paintings that I was working on this week.  I am not sure what we are are going to with them, and I am still debating if we should hang them all together or if separately.

Now that this project is out of the way, I need to start working on the paintings for the yoga room.  It is funny, I am still scared.  Painting just seems so permanent, even though it isn't.

Question to consider: How do you decide when a project is done?  I kept wanting to add more to these paintings but eventually I decided to let them sit for a while and appreciate them as is.

Grey Canvas

I have been painting all week, but the final project is still not done.  But so far things are coming together.  This all started with a grey canvas from a while ago.   I had so much leftover grey paint that I was left with a blank grey canvas, that I just stared at every time I walked into the kitchen or sat on the couch.  I had some ideas for a painting but nothing seemed within my skill set or what I really want to paint.

I realized I could use a favorite photo to inspire a painting.  I am waiting until all three paintings are done to post a picture of the actual painting.  But here is a photo of the inspiration!

I wish I could say that all of this painting has been a wonderful distraction from the real world, but I didn't find that to be the case.  However, the painting I am currently working on is a little risky, and I don't know how it is going to turn out.  But I am okay with using some paint to take the risk that it might turn out better than expected.

Question to consider: What prevents you from taking risks with creativity?   When it comes to painting, everything seems so permanent I am really afraid to experiment.  This week I am taking the attitude that really all I might waste is paint and canvas.  So far I have wasted a lot of paint, I don't know how much paint it takes to cover a given area.  Oh well!

Day One of a hundred days

I was reading a blog post about hundred day challenges.  This blogger did 100 days of headstand in an effort to improve that posture.  I find it inspiring when my teacher does a handstand in the middle of the room.  I would love to to be able to do that, but I am terrified to try.

So everyday I am going to do a handstand and hold it for ten breaths.  My goal is to be able to do an unassisted handstand in the middle of the room on September 19th.   Since I haven't figured out a good way to take a self portrait while holding handstand I won't post a picture everyday, but I will be doing a handstand everyday.

Here is Day One!

Nutritious food

Confession time:  I have not been eating very well lately; I have been eating out more than I would like to and I have been eating more processed foods.  Between Adam working a lot, his yoga training and the Houston heat giving me migraines I have been eating most of my meals alone.

I find it difficult to cook just for me, it seems so much easier to grab some takeout or just heat up a frozen meal.  But the fact of the matter is I feel worse when that becomes a habit.  Today I got home after my classes and felt like cooking.  It may have had something to do with my teacher talking about how what you eat affects your energy levels and reserves.

So I had a wonderful lunch with fresh roasted tomatoes, salad and salmon.  I even made the vinaigrette on the salad.  It was good to experiment in the kitchen a little bit and use the fresh produce in the house.

Question to consider:  Do you find it more difficult to eat well (whatever that means to you) when you eat by yourself?  I really enjoy cooking for Adam, but when I am by myself I just don't feel like going through the effort.  What are some of your favorite solo meals?

Yoga room

On Friday our yoga room was finally finished, well the paint was dry.  There are still some things we want to do with with room but for now, we have this amazing clutter free space to practice yoga and meditate in.  I did a handstand to celebrate after I was done cleaning up all plastic.

This project started last year, when I was starting to meditate.  I had a lot of trouble meditating at home, because there was so much to distract me in every room.  So I decided to clean out our junk room back in November.  At first I just moved all the junk into the closet, and then I really committed to getting rid of things.  I took a lot of trips to Goodwill.

This picture was actually taken when we first moved into the house, but it was the only "before" picture I could find.  Honestly, when I started cleaning out the room it was much worse than this picture.  After I cleaned out the junk, we decided to get the carpet removed and to put in wood floors.  Of course, replacing this floor also meant we were going to replace our bedroom floor and the carpet in Sterling's "ball-room."  We like to group all our home improvement projects together for the maximum impact (headache).
This picture was taken at six in the morning, when I started painting.  I started early because this room gets pretty toasty without the blinds.  Plus I wanted to finish the room that day and I still had to make it to my yoga practice.
I painted a message to send to Adam while he was at work.  This is the wall that will be supporting our handstands and other inversions.
This is the after picture!  This is now my favorite room in the house, even though it gets toasty.  We ordered some blinds and they should be coming soon.  I asked for suggestions for gender neutral colors that were relaxing and we considered both green and yellow tones.  In the end I wanted walls that wouldn't show footprints, and would be easier to clean.

We are lucky that we had an extra room that we could really dedicate to our practice, but I was getting really discouraged with this project.  Then everything fell together and it worked out perfectly.

Question to consider: Are you patient when it comes to home improvement projects? Or do you get discouraged when the timeline takes so much longer than you anticipated?  I need to work on my patience when it comes to home improvement projects, poor Adam had to help me keep things in perspective.

Truth

I was getting ready to work on my post for the day, when I got distracted by Facebook.

I waste a lot of time on Facebook and exploring links that my "friends post."  It is rare for me to feel a need to share the videos, but this video spoke to me.

Life can be about choosing something different than the default setting.

Question to consider:  What are your fun plans for the weekend? I've been told I need to have more fun so I am looking for good ideas.  Stay safe readers!

Strength

Today is a big day for Adam!

He is taking a big step in his yoga practice and starting his teacher training.  It is really inspiring to watch him grow and change since he began yoga.

I love that Adam is pursuing this interest even though it is going to be very difficult.  He is redefining his standards.

I talk about yoga a lot, but it has really made a difference in both of our lives.  Most people don't understand this journey and many people make fun of yogis; but Adam is following this path despite that.  That is inspiring! I know that he will continue to cultivate support for this passion.

Question to consider:  What activity would you like to take to the next level?  I know that I am not ready for teacher training yet, one day I will be strong and confident enough.

Red and blue

So I sat down to paint, and I wanted to have a purple theme so I mixed red and blue together.  For whatever reason I got black and then grey.

So I used the grey paint, I had a lot of it since I kept trying to make purple.

Question to consider:  what do you so with the grey paint in your life?  I have been struggling with a lot of grey lately, maybe life is trying to show me I just need to use it and move on.

Cooking class

Adam and I took an wonderful/amazing cooking class.  Honestly I can't wait to try out some of these recipes and share them with friends.  It was so nice to get out and have a date night.  We had such a relaxing weekend I feel ready to tackle all the projects at home this week, including cleaning out the garage.

Anybody who is local should take the opportunity to take a class from Ryan, he was very entertaining and explained why he was adjusting the recipes, and encouraged us to make recipes our own.
