Family time

Boarding Air Force One with the family.

Question to consider: How do you deal with crowds at a museum?  I hit a point where I just had to get away from everyone and take some deep breaths outdoors.  It is too bad the Ronald Reagan library was so crowded.

We are in California!  So excited to see my family, friends, the ocean and spend time exploring and discovering.

So I went and had a celebrated happy hour with the girls last night at a new restaurant, Sonoma.    We had a wonderful time, girls' nights are awesome.  The food was enjoyable, but I wasn't a huge fan of my Sangria. Next time I will try something else, since we are going to go back and sit on the roof and enjoy the sparkly lights!

I wanted to take a moment to examine my list and see how things are going.

I love this man!  He is attending a conference this week, so I get to see him all dressed up.  He works so hard, it is really inspiring.

101

So yesterday ended my 100 days of handstanding.   I did attempt a handstand, far away from the wall and was so concerned about kicking too far that I never even got my feet to the wall.  However I did manage an awesome forearm stand in my class.   I am getting stronger, but I still lack a great deal of confidence when it comes to inversions.  I am not giving up on the goal to be able to a handstand in the middle of the room unassisted, I am saying that 100 days was not enough practice for me.   I focused on the results instead of the action. I will fall in love with doing handstands.

On a more positive note, I have been really enjoying my bead challenge that I decided to tackle.  I am just over halfway done with the 40 beads.  When I first started with challenge I honestly thought I could knock it out with one canister of gas and a week.  I don't work as fast as I used to, also I am making up a lot more of the beads on the fly instead of sketching them out before hand.  So I am using up the gas faster than I anticipated.

Question to consider: Do you have a bucket list?  Do you have a list of goals that you intend to accomplish in this life?

Day 99

Tomorrow is day 100.  I have to say that this handstand experiment has been a little bit of a disaster.  The past couple of weeks I have been dealing with some very tight muscles, which feels like severe pain.  It has changed my practice quite a bit, and I have not been able to spend as much time practicing handstands or even practicing the poses that help me stabilize handstand as I would need to.

Adam and I are going to work with handstands a little bit tonight, and we will see what happens.  But I haven't been practicing or preparing myself to do an unassisted handstand in the middle of the room for the past couple of weeks.    So I am asking myself do I reset the counter?  Do I attempt a different goal?  How do I not feel like a failure for not accomplishing my goal?

Question to consider: What attitude do you chose when you don't accomplish a goal?  How do you change the story?    Right now I am feeling pretty small, so I need some ideas to change my story.

"Welcome to your life."

This is how I would describe my life: Adam, Sterling, family, friends, yoga, meditation, board games, good food, creativity and the occasional risk.

Question to consider: How would you describe your life in 10 descriptions?

Bunny Therapy

This is for anyone that needs a smile today.  There are so many things in the world and so many people in the world, you can chose where to to put your focus.

Question to consider:  What made you smile today?  I smiled after spending two hours in the kitchen making green chile stew and cleaning up.  I love the fact that I can take the time to make Adam and I some comfort food.

Choices

This morning I had a very powerful class.  There a lot of topics and ideas that I took away from the discussion this morning.  For the purposes of this venue I will write about choices, mostly as reminder for myself.  I do actually go back from time to time and read certain posts, this will be one of those posts.

I am not my thoughts or my feelings, I am my actions.  I can always chose my actions.  I have a choice if I want to act out in anger or take a deep breath and show some compassion.  I have a choice about what to hold on to and what to let go of.  I have a choice about bracing for impact or opening my heart.  I have a choice to feel certain of my worth, to know that I am simply enough.

Every breath, every moment requires a choice; and every breath gives us the opportunity to make a new choice.

"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." -J.K. Rowling

Question to consider: What will you chose today?

Learning

So I have started making beads again, inspired by a bead challenge.   I will talk about the challenge once all the beads are done.  However yesterday I was shown another important lesson when working with glass.  I was working to prevent a rod from shattering, since I could see the stress marks in the glass.

I did prevent the rod from shattering, but I also lost the work on this bead.  My torch was was way too cold to melt the huge chunk of glass in.  I was so focused on the glass rod that I didn't think about the temperature of my torch and once I heard the sound of glass cracking, I lost my focus.  It is no wonder that my rod still broke.

One of the reasons I love this hobby is because I have to be here and now.  I have to think about everything that I am doing.   Yesterday I learned a lot about playing the temperature of my torch.   At first I thought about this bead as a failure.  Then I remembered my original goal was to be safe, neither me or the pup was hurt by glass.  This hobby continues to test my focus.

Question to consider: What tests your focus?

Number 13 (4,5)

Yeah the first challenge for number 13 is complete, but it is time to raise my game.  So we will try 33 new restaurants in Houston.  The reason I chose this challenge is because Adam and I always talk about trying new places but we always seem to go to our favorites.  I wanted to get out of our comfort zone and take advantage of more that this city has to offer.

Over Labor Day weekend Adam and I tried two new restaurants.  The first place was Uchi and it was so amazing.   Amazing doesn't even seem like a good enough word, I enjoyed every single moment.  The second we walked in the door we were treated to a complementary taste and our waiter was so helpful.  The presentation of all the food was beautiful and the entire experience was wonderful.  It was the most enjoyable meal that we have had in a long time, I can't wait for another special occasion so that we can go back.
That weekend we also met some friends for lunch and tried Gratifi.  This place had very fresh food and a comfortable atmosphere.  We are excited to go back and bring Sterling, they even offer doggie dinners that Sterling can enjoy on the porch with us.  Once the weather turns a little cooler, we will have a nice dinner with the pup!

Question to consider: What is the most important factor to you when you chose a restaurant?  What makes your dining experience awesome?

Number 19

This weekend we had a little party to celebrate Adam's first yoga class and to celebrate Adam and I completing our home-study for our adoption.  So I made a watermelon cake.  It has been so hot in Houston lately, I hoped this would help keep everyone hydrated.

I love how the cake turned out, and it was really good.   I did make a huge mess trying to cut the watermelon,  my knife skills need a lot of work.

This cake picture is perfect for today since it is my Dad's birthday.  Happy Birthday Dad!

Question to consider: We have a ton of watermelon leftovers.  Does anyone have anymore fun ideas of what to do with watermelon?

Beads

I used my torch for the first time since December and worked with glass for the first time since I took a class at the beginning of the year.   At first it was like no time had passed, and then I realized how much time I have lost.

I am still really uneasy about making beads again, I have lost both my confidence and competence.  However, time disappeared for the twenty minutes that I was working.  I was here and now.

Question to consider: What activity do you miss?

Vulnerability

So I woke up really early this morning (4:00 ish) and was not able to get get back to sleep.  My mind was racing a thousand miles an hour thinking about a conversation I had yesterday with my teacher about boundaries and walls.  So I picked up my cell phone and started looking for information to help me resolve some of the questions I was working through.  This morning Google was absolutely amazing and my search led me to this TED talk.

I have spent the morning learning more about this speaker and looking up some more YouTube clips.  A lot of what she is talking about is resonating with me.   However I still find myself asking the question "How?"

How does one take down the walls?  How does one practice vulnerability and compassion?   What does that look like, and feel like?

Quote to consider:  To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable. – C.S Lewis

A warm breeze

It is still pretty hot and humid here in Houston, but there have been some nice breezes and I am happy spending a little bit of time outside.

It is wonderful to take some moments outside to feel the sun and wind on my face.  Today in the backyard I was able to watch little birds learn to fly.  It is a magical day to watch the birds test their wings.

This afternoon I was a little frustrated that I had to park on the top of the parking garage, but then I realized the opportunity I was given.   I had a beautiful view of the city.

Question to consider: What did you see outside today?

Outdoors

We finally got some patio furniture that is much nicer than our camping chairs.  I love our camping chairs, but I decided I wanted a bistro set so that we can eat breakfast and dinner outside.

I can't wait for cooler temperatures!

Question to consider: Do you enjoy eating outdoors?
