Reflections

I love how this picture captured the light reflecting from the giant rain drops.  It is a rainy, rainy day in Houston.  Usually I would spend the day making soup but today I will just do my candle meditation and see what stories I hear.

I found this quote today and just wanted to share:  “Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.”  -Lao Tzu

Question to consider: What are you resisting today?  I am resisting getting my winter clothes in order and planning some outfits for the next couple of days.

More word paintings

I learned with this project that spray paint is awesome, and from now on when I do word paintings I will use it. There was considerably less bleeding with my last painting.

It is wonderful to be learning and experimenting!  I also spent today mixing colors in an effort to duplicate the color purple from my wedding.  I am working on experimenting for Christmas gifts!

Question to consider: What words do you carry with you?  Do you have a mantra to help you keep going?

Center

It would be an understatement to say I have been a little emotional lately.  In fact my emotions have been a crazy roller coaster ride lately.  I have been finding new ways to center myself.

The most recent is to walk outside and feel the sun and wind on my face.  I often times just lay down in the backyard and come back to my senses.

Sometimes this works and I know what I should do next, other times it gives me a little break from this emotional roller coaster.  Even a couple of breaths of stillness can help.

Question to consider:  How do you ground yourself or find your center when you feel lost?

Number 13 (8)

Friday night we tried food from the Waffle Bus, a local food truck!  I was extremely happy with the sliders.  In fact I may have driven Adam a little crazy talking about how much I wanted to visit the waffle bus again.

Question to consider: Have you ever had food from a food truck?

Finding

This post has been a work in progress and to be honest I didn't know if I wanted to share the story.  However I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and he told me, that it is a story that people need to hear.

Last week my lovely grandmother passed away.  She gave me one last bit of inspiration before I said good bye to her.  She faced her death the same way that I saw her face her life, with a smile and an open heart.  I took a last minute plane ticket and visited my previously active grandmother in a hospital bed paralyzed and unable to swallow properly.   My grandmother continued to find miracles and reasons to smile.   She told us "even on your bad days, FIND a reason to smile."  She cracked jokes with us and cried with us.  She was so grateful for life.  I now have a solid example of what it looks like to see change as an opportunity and not pain.

I have spent the last little bit of time trying to decide how to describe my grandmother, how to describe my relationship with her.  Today when I was walking Sterling, it hit me.  If you want to know my grandmother and understand how much she meant to me, spend time with me.  The lessons she taught me I will carry with me, I will always be her granddaughter and she will always be my grandmother.

Rest in Peace; I love you!

This is a stack of letters that I sent my grandmother when I was living in California.  She kept every one of my letters and postcards.

Ripples

Today I spent some time meditating and just watching the ripples of a fountain by our home.  It is interesting to me that I enjoy watching ripples and waves when it involves water but I resist those ripples in my own life.  I am tossing pebbles, rocks and boulders expecting some sort of results, but I do not allow the results to reveal themselves.  I am challenging myself to focus on the action instead of focusing on the results. I also want to toss a lot more pebbles and leave the boulders behind!

Question to consider:  Are you results-driven or do you enjoy the ripples?

Crush(er)

So last Friday Adam and I went to see Wil Wheaton vs. Paul and Storm.  The show was hilarious, and both of us really needed a laugh.

But here is my story about Wil Wheaton or as I always think of him Wesley Crusher on Star Trek the Next Generation.  I am pretty sure my first Hollywood crush was on Wesley Crusher.  Maybe he even inspired me to marry a scientist who understands how the world and universe interact in a different way from everyone else. (Is that a really vague sentence or what?). Basically I married an Earth wizard!

I really enjoyed the night and the little inside jokes that keep building.  However, Adam is not allowed to wear a bright orange western shirt.

Question to consider: Who was your first "Hollywood" crush?

Number 13 (7)

A while ago Adam and I went with some of our friend to the Chelsea Bar and Grill.  The food really hit the spot, but I would like to go back and try one of their burgers because they looked amazing!

I know that I haven't been updating as often, life got a little crazy for a while and I am really trying to ground myself and get things back in order.

Question to consider: What are your tricks to change your state and help you feel more grounded when life is spinning out of control?  How do you return to center?  Mostly I have been really focusing on getting a lot of rest and relaxing.

Comfort cooking

Today I used my new donut hole baking pan!  For years I have been wanting to try apple cider donuts in New England.  Today I decided to try and bake something like them.  So I made apple cinnamon donuts and then covered them in an apple cider glaze.

Right now I am waiting for the glaze to cool and dreaming of falls days!

Question to consider: What are your favorite fall foods?

Primary question

Everyone has a primary question, a question they ask themselves all the time.

My latest painting is inspired by my primary question.

Question to consider: What is your primary question?

Sharing stories

There is a blog that I follow that asked for dress submissions for an art challenge that she is doing, a dress a day for 100 days.  This blog was the original source of inspiration for my 100 days of handstands.  When she asked for reader submissions I knew of a dress that I wanted to submit, and when I was taking the picture of one a second dress popped into my mind.  (There was a third dress but I figured I would stop with two.)

So go check out all the dress submissions and check out the rest of the blog.  I really enjoy reading it every day!

Morning fog

The morning fog makes everything look a little spooky.  I can't help but think about the fog in California on mornings like this. It seems like every place I have lived October is my favorite month.  How lucky am I that I get to visit all three states this month?

Question to consider: What is your favorite month?

Sitting on the Rhone

I am finally feeling a little better, and got hit with some magic fairy dust of inspiration.   I had a girl's night filled with painting and wine before we left for California.  We learned to paint an edited version of Starry Night on the Rhone.  However I didn't like the boats in the painting and decided not to paint them.

I wasn't sure how I wanted to finish the painting until this morning.  I wanted to paint Adam and I back in France watching the lights of Arles.  I remember our last night in France before we got back on the boat we took a breath and looked at the lights reflecting in the river.

It is hard to believe that trip happened, it is hard to believe this is my life.  The good and the bad have brought me here and now.

Question to consider: What was your most memorible vacation?  Where is your dream destination?

Traditions

I take a lot of comfort in traditions, whether it is pizza on Christmas Eve or eating green chile when one of us has a cold.  I like knowing what is going to happen and when.  However even traditions are different every time.  Adam and I have gone to the Greek festival almost every year since we moved to Houston.  Every year is different and we have different memories from each year.  So while I like to take comfort in knowing what is going to happen, in reality I never know what is going to happen.  It is different every time.  Everyday is different and unique, it has its own series of challenges.  I am learning approach change as an opportunity and embrace spontaneity.  However some traditions like pizza on Christmas Eve will never go away.

Question to consider:  What is one of your favorite traditions?

Number 2

This is a photo of the collage that is on our web profile for our adoption agency.  Don't we have a good looking family? I am so excited that we are moving forward with this path.  Now, Adam and I get to practice trust and patience while we wait to hear from the adoption agency.

Question to consider: What virtues are you practicing in your life right now?

It was so nice to see everyone in California and it is wonderful to be back in Houston.

Good-bye running in California

The next time I run I hope to cultivate this calm and peaceful state that I was feeling when I noticed this beautiful scene in the park.

Question to consider: Do you have any advice for a new runner on how to keep going?

Dreams

Adam and I just watched a video about the building of Hearst Castle.  We are waiting to go on the tour of the castle, and I wanted to share this quote. "Dreams are meant to be shared."

Question to consider: What is one of your dreams?  I dream of being an amazing mother one day, until then I am focusing on being an amazing wife, daughter and woman.
